EDITOR’S NOTE

Yang Jiang (1911–2016) was a renowned Chinese writer, playwright, and translator. She was married to Qian Zhongshu (1910–1998), one of the greatest writers in 20th century China, the author of the novel Weicheng (Fortress Besieged). Yang and her husband were seen as a model couple. These two individuals, each with strong spirits but delicate hearts, fell in love. In their 63 years of marriage, the small family of three members (the couple and their daughter), went through wars, political turmoil, and illness, but they were always there for each other.
